Vanda, Strap leaf vs. terete pencil leaf type
I'm familiar with Vanda's being of the strap leaf type. I am new to the Terete or pencil leaf type. Is there such a thing as a semi-terete? And can an Ascda. be a semi-terete type? I recently inherited an "Ascda Nora Tokunaga 'Lemon Pie', which I am NOT familiar with. Some-one suggested that it looked like a semi-terete. Does anyone have this orchid or can tell me anything about it? It is now about 3 1/2' tall and I just noticed that is has new spike only about 1/2" long. I will post pics. if and when it does bloom. In between time I hope some-one knows of this Ascda.

There is such a thing as semi-terete leaves. Other examples are Brassavola nodosa and relatives. I have not had any experience with the Ascda. Nora Tokunaga 'Lemon Pie'.

This one happens to be semi-terete due to one of it's grandparents being V. teres, which is a terete vanda.

Don,
There is such a thing as semi-terete and quarter-terete Vandaceous orchids. It all depends on the parentage, as Susanne pointed out.
On your Nora Tokunaga, one of the grandparents is V. Miss Joaquim, which is a semi-terete, which makes your little one a quarter-terete.
I did not see any other terete influenece when I looked it up witn my new OrchidWiz program.

Thanks one and all. I now have a picture, thanks to Susanne, and know a little more about teretes. Swamper, I am going out of town tomorrow but will post a picture of the leaf structure when I return. Wow, how much I have learned from OB. TANKS!

Yes Vanda did come in strap leaf, semi-terete or terete leaf type. Strap leaf is the most common group including the Ascocentrum, Rhyncostylis, Renanthera and Arachnis and terete leaf is Papilionanthe (former included in the Vanda). Semi-terete leaf type is Holcoglossum so depending on the hybrid you can get any combination of these three. Ascocenda with Pipilionanthe Miss Joauqin (Vanda for registration) in the background will give u the semi-terete type.

And don't forget crosses with paraphalaenopsis, which can produce terete or semie terete hybrids
