I definitely feel like chemicals might have caused the spotting - this has happened to me also. Then again, it could have been thrips - but at any rate, the cause of the spots is something external that you applied, I don't think its a systemic problem.

Yes, I have always made sure to apply insecticides and algae/fungicides in the evening. Many of them don't react well with heat....or eachother!

I will definitely have to get some Orthene then. Smell is really not a problem because the Malathion already smells ungodly...kind of like a rotten egg exploded in your house for the rest of the day...so I am sure I can stand the Orthene!

The good news is that the other vanda with a spike on it looks undamaged thus far, and should be quite a show! My first pink vanda! Yippeee!!!!

I agree with David about use orthene. Others I don't use. David has some really beautiful vandas so I support the advice he has given you. I have many vandas that bloom twice a year and sometime the flowers will be somewhat smaller for the second blooming but never deformed like yours. Maybe with good cultural practices it will be different next year.

The sad thing is, I really thought I was giving the plant good culture! I guess I didn't think about the negative effects of using things the way I was using them, instead I just focused on thrips eating my spike or fungus attacking the plant, etc. Next time I will make sure to look at the bigger picture.

I also never thought about the fact that it is the second blooming (and so close the other blooming) that coudl have affected it's performance. You live and learn, right?

BTW, the pink vanda pics will be up as soon as the first flower pops! I think it might even be the first blooming because I can't see any other spike remnants in there! It is looking really good...hopefully nothing like this will happen to the pink lady!
