Smaller Vanada????? Male
Question Smaller Vanada?????

I will be at my first orchid show tomorrow. I am looking for a small (or smaller) sized Vanada. This will be my first.....any ideas for a beginner. . When I say smaller, I don't mean size of flower, just plant from tip to roots.

Thanks for any recommendations.....Faz

You could look for the Vanda species lilaciana, Its one of the smallest, if not the smallest, species of the vanda's. When i say family I don't mean alliance i mean the Vandas' only, I know ascocentrums are related to the vandas and they are also small. Neo finetia is an option for a small plant, as well as most or the Angraecum and a few of the jumellea species. Many of the ascocentrums and angraecums are les than six inches wide and tall at maturity, the vanda is eight inches, and many smaller jumelleas are less than a foot, and of course neo finetis is less than eight inches. Many are also fragrant.

Hi Faz,

Here are a few of the smaller vandaceous plants that I know of that might suite your needs. The only true vanda I'll list is V. coerulescens, which is a spring bloomer that stays relatively small. Christensonia vietnamica is a wonderful small species that blloms when it is quite small (under 6 inches), and does so several times a year, mainly during the summer months. Intergeneric hybrids made with this guy are also small and frequent bloomers. They would include Coronadoara (Crd.) Crownfox and Fuchsara (Fcr.) Crownfox, both of which are available from RF Orchids. Look under Vandaceous Hybrids on the link provided by Bonsai.

Good Luck!
