V. Erika Cizek Dann
Here are a few photos of my V. Erika Cizek Dann in bloom with two spikes! It has a slight sweet fragrance in the morning. Enjoy!

Two spikes, how can you not just love that. It appears that you have quite a collection. So. Fla. I can see why. They thrive there like no other. Congrats nice growing!

Thanks everyone for your kind remarks. Here's a little added information: the flowers on this guy measure between 4 and 41/2 inches across.

Very pretty David. I was wondering what Sib. 1 looked like. I am hoping I am correctly identifying it as Sib. 1 and Sib 2 is the one in your avatar? This one is beautiful in a way of it's own, but definitely somethign I would love to have as well!

Hi jenn,
You are corrrect, this is the one that I formally named 'Sib 1'; however I took that lable off of it, as I have given the other one (my avatar photo) an official cultivar name now. That one is now V. Erika Cizek Dann 'David's Black Pearl'.
Right now it has three spikes.... ...and I am planning on taking it for AOS judging when it blooms out. It will be several weeks from now, but I will definitely keep everyone posted.

Just trying to understand the process. How could you give your orchid an "official cultivar name" when you haven't even had it judged yet? I thought I understood that when you have an un-named orchid cross, and it was judged by AOS and awarded then you can give it a name of your liking. I understand that anyone can name any given orchid anything they wish but it would not be officially recognize until it was judged and awarded.

Hi Don,
I was confused about this as well, and actually thought the same thing even though I kept seeing all these hybrids on the market with cultivar names and no awards. I got clarification from Ray when I created a thread a while back called "What's in a name?", stating pretty much what you did here. Ray pointed out that a cultivar name could be given to any plant by anyone at any time. That is when I decided to give my avatar Vanda its cultivar name.
Since then I have had a conversation with a well respected grower in Homestead, Florida, and I told him about my cultivar name, to which he said he thought it was a good name, and that it is a common practice to name plants this way.
So that explains why we see so many cloned plants on the market that have cultivar names, but no award classification also.
In case you are interested, here is a link to the thread I mentioned above. Ray's comments are on page 1: What's in a name? I hope this helps.
