Sometimes I am on business in Taiwan. Mostly Taichung but sometimes also Taipei. I am planning a trip to Taiwan in October. This time I will visit friends and want to have a look at some orchid nurseries.

That is absolutely gorgeous!!! How do you care for it? How large is the whole plant? How long have you had it? Any more information would be greatly appreciated!

You have a beautiful plant there. Good growing!

I do not have a better picture, but the posted picture shows basically the whole plant. You can see the small top leaf and the pot. This plant is 15 cm (6") hight. The flowers size is 1.5 cm (0.6").

Thank you. This is the information I have about growing this species in the climate of South Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). I am growing this plant together with my Vandas and Ascocendas.
Name: Gastrochilus japonicus (Makino) Schltr. (1913)

Synonyms:
Gastrochilus holttumianus S.Y.Hu & Barretto 1976:
Gastrochilus taiwanianus S.S. Ying 1977:
*Saccolabium japonicum Makino 1891

Classification:
*SubTribe: Aeridinae
*Genus: Gastrochilus
*Specie: japonicus

Distribution: South Japan, Taiwan, East China.

Blooming season: Early summer.

Temperature: Range from +5ºC.in Winter up to +35ºC. in Summer

Light: Plenty of light. Growing together with Vandas.

Plant size: 15 cm

Flower size: 1.4 cm - 2.0 cm on spikes from 10 to 15 flowers

Planting media: A mix of Pine bark, granite gravel, charcoal. This plant is not mounted on bark or wood as recommended by other growers.

Watering: Grows best with plenty of water. In Summer two times a day.
In Winter one time a day in the morning before the sun hits the green house.

Observation to the picture: This particular plant I have now 15 years. The origin is Taipei.
In 2007 this plant had 7 flower spikes, all together with approximately 100 flowers.

Another unusual one for me. Looks like a fairly large specimen. Do the spikes come out inbetween the leaves?

Yes, the spikes come out from in between the leafs. This plant is from the Vandeae tribe and grows the flower spikes like Vandas and Ascocendas. But the spikes are very short. Check the picture from 2004.
