Gwen, that is so beautiful. I love the way its potted I have seen this before but can't remember what its called. I would love to try my hand at this type of potting.

The traditional, Japanese method is to make a moss mound (like a mini mountain), or a moss mound with a cavity inside, but I use a sort of custom bark mix and tuck the long strand sphagnum on top in a soft mound.

My conditions here in CO are so dry that I have to have that top dressing. . .but I think it's pretty to look at too.

Masdevallias are not my specialty, I have killed many and those that dont die me every day. I do enjoy their flowers but I just dont know sometimes.

I bought a 'LionKing' which should be very much like that. Mine hasn't bloomed yet but I'm anxious to see it. I have become hooked on Neo hybrids but haven't planted any of mine in the traditional Japanese way. I put one in an Erin pot but the others I have hanging in black plastic baskets, I let the roots do their own thing. The Erin Orchid Pot I used has several holes in the sides. That should look cool when the roots start to grow through the holes.

Hey, I was just wondering - my ascf. twinkle just bloomed, and I was hoping it would be orange, and it is the palest white cream....is this normal? I got it at Hausermanns, and it was sitting on the bench right next to the bright orange ones, so I thought it would be orange! Does the color darken over time? Or maybe its just too young yet...just wanted to get your opinions

I don't know. . .this is the only one I've seen with my own eyes.

But mine is still bright orange and it's been in bloom for a couple of weeks now. I've got it under 2 (2ft) T5 lights, just five inches or so, under the bulbs. So, I am not thinking that the bright light is fading them.

Hmmm. . .interested to hear what the rest of you think.

It might just be your conditions, maybe its too warm where you flowered it. I have had flowers that change color even on the same inflorescence because they are moved from the warmer growing area to the cooler house. I find the colors get deeper when the flowers are grown cool. next time it blooms just move it somewhere cool before the buds open.
