Vanda tricolor Lindl.
Just a few flowers... but nicely perfumed! This plant can get very large and tall.

Very nice. I think this is one that has been separated away from tricolor and is now called V. suavis. Then again with the amout of brown in the flower ther could be another Vanda in there as well.

Actually, Roy, suavis is a variety of Vanda tricolor. Suavis has white background with purple spots. Lindley described Vanda tricolor in 1847 and Vanda suavis in 1848 thinking that it was a new species. Later it was found that V. suavis is merely a color variation of the type . The type standard colors is what is seen above. Take a look at the painting in the monumental Lindenia: Orchids: Lindenia: Vanda tricolor

Thanks for the info, its just that I don't think anyone here has the genuine plant then because your plant hasn't been seen. Nor on the species pages on the web, even the specialists pages.

Mauro,
It's a beautiful plant ...I'm jealous!
I've tried growing this species, both the "usual" form and the suavis variety without any blooms. What is your secret with this plant? Do you do anything special compared to growing other vanda species?

Well, no secrets I think... This plant likes very bright light, a little more than regular Vandas need. Roots in the air, plenty of water. I water mine every day. I fertilize it twice a week with a very strong solution of a NPKCalMag formula. I always fertilize first, then 15 minutes later I water to wash away any possible salt build ups. That's it.

Mauro,
Thanks for the info. I'll move mine so it gets a little more light. Other than that, we are using pretty much the same formula for growing vandas.
