I know this is kind of an older thread, but I just wanted to ask how you hang this if you grow it bare roots? Do you have it sitting in a container or did you tie something to it to hang it?

Hi, I sit my plant in a container where there is no medium.
Bare foot is the best way to grow this kind of orchids if your growing condition permits that.

Pheli,
I am wondering how large the flowers actually are? I fell in love with the Rhyncostylis gigantea, and then I was shocked to see it in person and see how tiny the flowers were! Is this one like that? This is at the top of my wish list and I haven't gotten one yet becuase I have yet to see one in bloom in person.

Well I have been threatening mine that I am going to send it to Marilyn (Grandma M.) if it doesn't perform for me next year. I purchased it as Blooming Sized, and I got nothing this year, perhaps it needs higher light, so I am going to try that...or else! Actually I am glad I haven't given up on her yet seeing these pictures and I know how hard a good one at a not so steep price is to find. I have also been searching for a way to pot mine as it wasn't secure in it's clay pot with coco husk fiber, it liked to wobble around. That is why I asked pheli earlier what bare foot was exactly. I was contemplating potting mine in LECA, but NOT using the s/h culture. I just really need a way to keep it from wobbling in it's container, without having a container that takes up a huge amount of space since I have it in my orchidarium for humidity reasons.

Hi, the flower of Aer. houll is about 3 cm wide wich is slight larger than Rhy. gigantea.
These fox tail orchids usually do not have big flowers like vandas, but the entire inflorescence is just something that will attract you to fall in love with them!

Becca, If you are able to let your vandas or ascocendas come to flower, it doesn't matter to flower this one in your growing area.
If your grow your plant in pot with coarse medium, it is of great importance to keep the plant from wobbling because that will interfere with the root growing.

I don't have any actual vanda's or ascocendas...but I do have a few in the vanda alliance such as Neo's, Haraella, Aeranthes (have not bloomed), Aerangis, and Angraecum. I understand those all have different light requirements from this one. I will move it up closer to the lights and see if I can get it to bloom next year! Is it possible this one is not able to be bloomed under my kind of lights (T5's)?

Nice flower. I love Aerides and it's one of the best in the genus. Your plant is still a baby and huelletiana can get upto several feet tall with over 12" leaf span. Of course you will get more flowers. Light is the same as other vandas. All aerides need a slight dry winter rest from Nov to March (they all come from moonsoon area) for best flowering. Other wise they will just keep on throwing up more leaves instead of spike. Both pot or basket will do fine, but the plant will get tall eventually and start to hangdown, but you can always top cut the plant to keep it under 2'.
