Thanks for the birthday wishes and the good luck wishes on my keikis and the like. I checked on them last night, this morning, etc. and they all look happy and healthy. What more could I ask for? Well flowers, of course, but in due time! Anyway, one of the keikis is pretty much under the root mass and I don't know if it will be able to push it's way through. I am just letting nature take it's course though. It looks very healthy thus far, so I will just see what happens.

Thank you again. I am celebrating being 2 dozen today! That is what I am calling it. Younger, older, whatever...I think I may just be staying the same age...HAHA.
I am definitely going to do some celbrating though...a little tonight, some more on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday! It is nice spreading out a birthday that way. Thank you for the wishes, again!

Well...I for some reason forgot to bring the pic of the new plant with the basal keikis on it! But, I do have some others for you all! First, the Tharab Blue mentioned earlier in the post is spiking! It seems to finish flowering, grow for about a month or two and then send out a new spike. Could the plant actually out flower itself? I mean, there are only 5 or 6 more spots above where the new shoot is starting. It doesn't seem to grow fast enough to produce spikes as fast as it does.
I am also posting a pic of the second vanda my grandmother gave me. You can kind of see the one seh gave me first behind it. You can also see that I need more hooks to hang these beauties!

Sadly, orchids can flower themselves to death but from the looks of the roots that are underneath your plants, you should be ok. Good growing!

I sure hope so. I had one vanda that appeared to have decent roots and just toppled over one day and broke. It is re-rooting though. This particular one though appears quite healthy. I will keep an extra close eye on it though just in case. Thanks!

vandaceous kikies
Hi Jenn,
I agree with those who suggest to keep the kiekies on your vandas so that they create a nice specimen plant over time; however if you're ever going to remove one to share with a friend or for some other reason, you should always make sure that the kiekie has at least 3 good sized roots, and it is removed during the proper time of year, which would be in late spring to midsummer for most of the continental US. Although vandaceous plants grow all year long, their growth rate during this period of the year is significantly greater, and you will have much healthier plantlings when the growth rate decelerates in the fall and winter.
Happy growing, David

Thank you for the tip. None of the keikis (although quite large) appear to have any of their own roots so far. Because of this, I assumed it would be next year, and now that is confirmed, when I could safely remove a keiki. However, by then, I may have changed my mind, and might just keep them all for myself! Just kidding...(sort of)
