Aeridovanda Photisan was made/registered by Siriphab in 1971.
To date, there are two awards - an AM (81) to 'Norma' from 1992 and an HCC (79) to 'Butterbaby' in 1995.
Is the plant that you have a mericlone?

Don thanks, I have some ascocendas too which I really love. They are just as beauiful, and smaller but that's ok they are magnificent in my book.
Cneos I read your comment and I had to look up what a mericlone was. You give me too much credit. I don't know if it is or not. I will find out tomorrow with a phone call. Very cool how they do that.
Chococatte you REALLY give me too much credit. If I ever learn how to make it, you will be the first to get one ok?
reminds me of the guy who was having yet another difficult time in his life and when his friend reminded him that God only sends you what you can handle, he replied after looking up to the sky..."God you might be giving me way too much credit"

Ok, I called the nursery and was told it is a mericlone. So I guess that's good.

Do you grow all your vandas in your pool area? No shade other then the screen? Just curious...
It is beautiful though and I love how bright the yellow color is!

Jenn I grow most of them on my gumbo limbo tree out back. They get the morning sun and the afternoon sunset sun, the are doing great and have been for a while.
This new one is protected from the morning sun by ESE trees. Only the screen is protecting it from that noon sun and that has me worried though the people that sold it to me said it would be perfect there. I am hoping it does well,I will keep a sharp eye on it. I will have to make room under the tree if it doesn't.

Mericlones are produced because the grower is trying to reproduce some superior factor of a specific plant. Mericlones are exact duplicates of their 'parents', the cloned plant.
When a plant receives an AOS award, it is often duplicated because of that superior factor, be it color, size, floriferousness, etc. Mericlones take the guess work away whereas, with a seedling you will be surprised at the variety in the offspring of the same two parents.

Will a mericlone ALWAYS be an exact duplicate?

Almost always. The genetic material is the same as the 'parent'.
Differences that occur are more related to culture than nature.
