Don't wanna hijack your thread, but
Ive gone to growing my vanda and two ascocentrums in pots. Ive had them for about a year and have not done them any favors at all! I never soak them enough. Its just too much work to remember, then get water dripping everywhere (I grow mostly inside). When I do remember they're really dry and I end up breaking off roots. Needless to say they have been my least favorite and Ive darn near sent them to the compost pile on more than one occasion. Well I finally got frustrated enough to put them in pots with lava rock and they LOVE IT. Im getting my first new leaf growth since I've had them and for those of you nubbin finatics you'll love the pics. Roots everywhere!!! New nubbins coming off the plant. New nubbins coming off old roots. And new ones crawling up from under the rocks. They sit in full sun from 1pm til sunset (ny sun is nowhere near Fl sun) and water them about 3 or 4 times a week. Basically when the roots on top look dry. I didn't even take them out of the baskets they were in. Just dropped the whole thing into open clay pots and poured in the lava rock. I took a couple pics, maybe now that they are a little more happy I'll have a chance of actually blooming one of them!!!

Hey Paul, nice pics. It sounds like they are getting better treatment now too. What I mean is, because of the pots, you can now water them regularly? Are they getting that sun like they did before or are they in a better situation to move them around to where they get more sun?...Love that culture quote btw.

Hello everyone.
Swamper: I am TRYING to grow Vandas now. My sister gave granny a vanda and she basically wasn't taking care of it, so I've sort of adopted it. It's bloomed 2x this year for me. I re-potted it in a basket with coconut husk fiber and chc, and it's hanging @ the front porch in the entrance of my house. It's doing well. I'm looking to buy more orchids that I can place in hanging baskets because I have a long walkway to the porch off to the side and I can put about 5-6 plants there. So hence my newest fascination with vandas and related species.
Marilyn: Yeah, I didn't think of taking my camera but when I go back I shall. I'll take lots of pics if the nursery owner lets me. To answer some of your questions--the pots are huge, the roots grow everywhere....I just can't describe it any better than that. They really do look like jungle plants. I didn't even know what they were until I asked. She had some vandas in baskets, but these drew my attetion. She also had some smaller ones that were not specimen sized in pots.
Cowboy--those look great!! No worries about hijacking!!!

Peewee, I got a new one to my collection, it's a terete type that I have hanging outside by the pool looks very cool and more than a little strange. I also purchased a couple of Ascocendas from a neighbor that has his own hybrids, I'll be posting the pics soon.... Im soooo lazy about resizing pics

Cool. That would be great to see. I am also lazy about re-sizing. Sigh.

more vanda
Ok here are a couple of pics of the terete type vanda I got. Its just hanging out by the pool. The other one is a cutting I tied to the tree since they seem to love that tree. You can see behind it where there is another vanda peeking out and maybe you can see its roots growing down the trunk.

This is not mine, but was at the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, a nice specimen sized V. suavis in a pot.

What do the flowers look like on the V. Coerulea and V. Luzonica? I am pretty sure I have a cross of those two and have never seen it bloom yet. Any idea what that might look like? BTW, mine are all in baskets with bare roots, except for the seedlings. I have them in tiny clay pots with small bark and a little spag throughout the mix to retain a little more moisture. They all seem pretty happy with those conditions.

Opps, not quite what I thought. These are my vandas. I do have those kinds, but not crossed with each other.
V. Odgen Phipps x V. Coerulea; V. Lions Winter Melody x (V. Luzonica x V. Loke); V. Kasem's Delight x V. Golamco's Blue Magic
The first one I have seen bloom and it is big and blue/purple. The second one I have about 5 or 6 seedlings of and have not seen bloom yet. The last one is the one previously reported as needed to re-root and has not bloomed either.
