Of course, I got the Vanda after winter but last winter I kept the fan in my furnace going with the built in humidifier set at 45% With the humidity trays around the orchids it got up to 55-60% during the day with temp high 70's evening went down to 45-50% and temp as low as 65.
We don't actually run our heat in the furnace as we parasite heat from the rest of the building. Sometimes we need to open a window in midwinter.

Vandas in a Bucket
Default watering vandaa

I’m in S Florida and the weather is good all year round. I have some Vandas that the roots just aren’t as green as I think they should be. Some are a bit brownish and some starting to turn yellow. I water them every day with the hose on mist and soak them for a good 5-10 min and sometimes twice a day. I guess my question is can I over water them? Do they need more water? I could try soaking in a bucket on some of them. What have you all tried?

Thanks

R

Hey Juneracer, you should probably post in a new thread to get better answers or maybe the introduction threads where you'll get a lot of help too. In the meantime, where in S.Fla are you and what vanda is it? DO not water in the evening. Are they outside? sun? hoew much?

my vanda contiues to do well. It seems happy. New growth is slow but perceptible. I also have a flower spike beginning. No evidence of disease. I found a minature snail last week which undoubtedly came from the vendor as a gift. Not more than 3 mm. in diameter. Even the hitchhiking clover-like weed is happy.

Hey Swamper,
I’m in the Stuart area, north of WPB. There all inside but up against the south screen in my porch so they get plenty of light. Its direct accept for what the screen cuts out. That’s only in the winter, in the summer they don’t get any direct light. All the Vandas look the same with the root structure so I don’t think its species dependent. I’m also wondering if that’s too much light? One is has a bit more yellow-green then seems healthy. Non are dark green so I know there getting enough. I haven’t had one burn from too much light. Will they yellow with too much light?

Thanks

Thanks for the update. I am keeping the picture you posted in mind and will be interested how your method fares during the winter.

Good luck getting rid of the bush snails.

Very interesting topic. Thanks to everyone for the info. I have 2 vandas which have never rebloomed though they look healthy. I suspect that they are now suffering from my neglect of not watering them as often as they would like. It has gotten too cold at night here to keep them outside and watering inside is a real hassle due to the length of the roots.

My question was asked by a pp, but I've got to bring it up again. Someone asked Ramon if the roots were coiled up in the bucket and he said they were growing down toward the reservoir. Roots on one of mine are over 2 1/2 feet long and will touch the bottom of any bucket I can find. What would you do?

Another dilemma... this same vanda is in a wooden basket with roots inextricably bound. Is there any hope to convert this to a sort-of-semihydroponic situation?

oh CB~~

Thankyou so much. I got a Trichoglottis brachiata & tried the potting deal with frequent waterings/mistings. The plant stalled. I looked at the roots--only 2 were left. So I have it in a wine carafe thing. I hope it pulls through. Did your continue to do well.

Sorry for the threadjack
