Arachnis Maggie Oei

Got this Arachnis Maggie Oei (variegated) from an Etsy seller.

USPS got this two me 3 days later than the expected arrival, so it look a little droopy from being in the box (that was pretty beaten up) without sun and water. It does have a little bit sprouting out the top, however.

Anarchis Maggie Oei is a cross between Anarchis hookeriana and Anarchis flos-aeris.

Anarchis hookeriana and flos-aeris apparently can grow as lithophytes or an epiphytes. They're also sun lovers, apparently more so than other orchids. Allegedly both of the parents produce fragrant flowers.

It'll likely make some nice striped/spotting flowers once it gets bigger.

I had a clay pot, some small pumice, a smaller bark mix and some leca and thought "why not". My hopes is that this will keep a little more moisture in this Texas heat and sun. Also since they can grow as lithophytes, I thought leca + pumice would work well. Doesn't look the most aesthetically pleasing (a lot of the pumice went to the bottom of the bucket I was mixing stuff with water, so it ended all up at the top in the pot), but if it works it works.

Lithophytic plants may “live on rocks”, but the vast majority of the time, their roots penetrate the organic detritus/moss filled cracks and crevices to get water and nutrition.

Obviously I can’t say for sure from that photo and don’t have much of a grasp on your growing conditions, but that mix seems awfully fine to me.

Maybe a moderator can correct the title. It's Arachnis (derived from the Greek for spider.)

They do root into soil sometimes, but more often vine their way through trees. I put a small piece of Arachnis flosaeris horizontally on top of a low, narrow but long plastic storage container filled with LECA. So far it's alive.

Yea, apologies, I didn't quite explain it well in the post. When I was mixing everything up, I added to much water to the bucket, so all of the pumice went to the bottom.

So while I was scooping the mix out and potting the plant, all of the pumice came last since it as all at the bottom of the bucket, so it ended up all on the top.

Here's a picture with all of the pumice scrapped off. It seemed kind of silly looking.

Good god, every time I've been looking up information with this genus, it's a 50/50 I fat finger the genus name as anarchis and instead of arachnis.

I just took the photos from a friend's garden. It could grow in coarse medium. But most new roots are free in the air or climb in the plastic web. Like other tropical vandas, it like higher humidity and warm weather. The plants could reach 2-3 meters easily.
