Ascocentrum himalaicum and insularum? Female
Question Ascocentrum himalaicum and insularum?

I love the Ascocentrums, just love them, and I want all of them! But I have a problem... I can't seem to find any pictures of the following plants. Anyone who knows how they look like?
Ascocentrum himalaicum
Ascocentrum insularum

Very odd...I find no information on them!
They are listed in Orchidwiz but there are no pictures or growing info

Where did you come up with these two choices...and do you have an opportunity to acquire them? I see nothing at all about them in my Google search.

A mystery for sure...

Since I like them, I was checkin at Kew which Ascocentrums that are accepted. I am intending to get all of them. So far I have five species (color varieties on two of them) and they all like me, therefore I want MORE! I find info on the other ones mentioned at Kew (although I can't find someone who sells all of them), but these two... I can't find anything about them. That's why I'm hoping someone here can guide me!

Crystal, your 2 plants are hard to locate BUT I did find a referrence to Ascocentrum himalaicum as being known as a Saccolabium himalaicum but still no pics.
Your Ascocentrum insularum is noted as an Asco but thats all, no pics either. I'm thinking that as they are relatively new they may both be re-classified into a different plant group like Saccolabium.

Åsa,

I talked to Eric A. Christenson (who described Asco. insularum as a new species), and Ascocentrum insularum is a species known from only 2 dried herbarium specimens. The holotype is from an island off the east coast of Borneo (Kalimantan), and the second specimen is from eastern Sulawesi. He says there are no photographs of this species, but has unpublished drawings of the floral dissection of both specimens.

As for Ascocentrum himalaicum, it is known from Burma, Bhutan, and China. There are also no photographs of this species, but there is a detailed drawing in the type publication. Eric also says that Asco. himalaicum has terete leaves, which several people have tried to segregate the taxon into it's own unispecific genus. Garay, Seidenfaden, and Christenson do not favor the weakly defined genera, so Ascocentrum is the genus to use with that taxon, not any other.

Hope this helps! It doesn't seem to probable you will have either species in your collection

-Pat

I haven't been here for a few days so I had not noticed the last two replies...

Thank you so much Pat/Mahon for the information. It nicely clarifies my questions about these two plants! I'll carry on dreaming about these two then, who knows what the future might bring? Once again, thank you so much for the info! =)
