Discount Vanda

Hello all!

Hope you are all doing great and staying healthy!

Today I visisted our local garden center and purchased this Vanda. It was discounted because one of the flower stems have broken.
When I bring her home I cut away 8-9cm of bare stem because it didn’t have any live roots, just those brittle and dried ones. I sealed the cut with waterproof paste meant for tree cuts.
Now she has these 6 thick, branched roots about half a meter long.

Maybe there is a way I could help her to cope with this stress apart of high light, water and humidity?
Also was it a good investment or I should have stayed away from it?

Any insight will be highly appreciated!

That looks like a happy healthy Vanda to me with good roots, and the plant doesn't seem stressed at all. I think you got a very good deal!

Removing the basket wihout trashing roots is difficult at best. If you have good humidity and can keep it well watered (like every day), you can just leave it as-is. If you need some medium to help hold moisture, I would just drop it (basket and all) into a suitably large pot with large bark or chunks of inorganic medium (like volcanic rock). That looks like an excellent plant... good growth, great roots.

I agree with the others-- the plant looks great. Here in Thailand, growing vandas is quite easy because of our incredibly high humidity (always near 100%). If I had your plant, I simply would do nothing except add a 4-wire hanger to the basket and keep it as a hanging plant. Roberta is right-- you must have humidity for the orchid to survive. I wish I could send you some of our excess humidity! (LOL).

By the way, I looked up Lithuania on Google because I know nothing about your country. OMG-- it looks incredibly beautiful!
