Vanda Ambrosian Discovery Male
Default Vanda Ambrosian Discovery

Purchased this primary hybrid (V. tricolor, var. suavis x V. insignis) from Motes a couple of years ago as a large seedling. I think it bloomed first time last year. This year:

In May it produced two good spikes. Since I was going to AOS judging with some other plants, I took it along and it received an AM/AOS (photos below). One of the features that appealed to the judges, is that it has a fairly large lip (many Vanda hybrids have a tiny lip, that you can barely see).

In late June it produced a 3rd spike, not well developed.
In August I got a 4th spike, well developed.
November, it is just opening the 5th spike of the year.

To boot, it is a very vigorous plant. It has 2 or 3 basal keikis, which are approaching the size where I might separate them.

I have the same plant, that I got from Motes when they were small seedlings - he was on vacation in Scotland at the time. Mine is in bloom too at the moment, second year of blooming and second time this year. It's got great colour, but the fragrance is very mild and disappointing.

That turned out to be a very beautiful Vanda!
Both parents truly appear in the flowers, as it looks like.

Just noticed two more spikes, that is 7 inflorescences in one season.

I am trying to breed with it, as that kind of flower production is worth working with.

Do you have any candidates in mind?

Considering the plant size (same as V. tricolor), I want to reduce the plant size some.

I have pollinated flowers on the current inflorescence with V. Pachara Delight 'Pachara', which is a large blue. However, it shows it's V. coerulea ancestry, in that the leaves are much shorter than what we see on other large flowered hybrids.

If that pod does not take, I have several smaller intergeneric hybrids in bud, so I can try something else on the next inflorescence.
