Yellow strap leave Vanda (Gifted- ants and one yellow leave )
Hy everyone i just got this Vanda from a friend, overall looks healthy in my unexperienced opinion lol. Expecting it closely i found quite a few ants i believe munching on a new spike or pseudobulb. I sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide to get rid of them was this action ok or did i make a mistake by doing so. Also theres this one yellow leave with brownish spots, not sure if its old age or something else. Thanks for the help
You don't want to use hydrogen peroxide on roots - it damages them. Neem oil, soapy water, pyrethrin-based sprays, and other insecticides will kill ants... not necessarily all of them, but will slow them down. Ants don't eat the plant, though. They MAY "farm" aphids, so you really don't want them around. Losing lower leaves on a Vanda is normal. It happens faster if the plant isn't getting enough water, though. That looks like a nice spike developing. Again, ants wont hurt it, but aphids WILL. They love the "honeydew" - sugar water that the bud may exude.
