Renanthera imschootiana
While I have a small (and extremely crowded) greenhouse, I much prefer to grow outside (more space, better light, better airllow) I have a particularly soft spot for Vandas and their relatives that will tolerate winter nights that can get fairly close to freezing, and colorful ones even more so. Renanthera imschootiana is near the top of the list. This plant has done quite well outside... I have had it through about 3 winters. I have it in a net pot with loosely-packed sphagnum that gives some extra humidity, but most of the roots are in the air and that's where the new ones are growing. There are several growths both at the base and along the stem where the crown of the original plant died. And two of those growths are blooming. (This in answer to the frequently-asked question about separating keikis... a big, strong plant is better , IMHO, than several small weak ones)

Indeed. You need one... it tolerates cold but doesn't require it. And you could also grow Ren. monachica outside (I can't... but it's also a pretty one, red spots on yellow background) There I go, spending your money again.  |

I love the red blooms of this plant. Too big for me to grow indoors - so I'll sit back and enjoy yours.

True, not petite. But look into something like Renanthera pulchella http://orchidcentral.org/Images/Vand...0pulchella.jpg
The whole plant (which has bloomed twice, so been "blooming size" for about 2 years or a bit more) is maybe 10 cm (4 inches) tall. And the flowers are somewhere around 4 cm, so huge for the size of the plant.

Ren. monachica is small enough to be grown on window sills.
Ren. imschootiana is larger, but not hugely so. If it gets too tall, make a top cutting.
