Vanda foetida. Nobody grows it? Male
Default Vanda foetida. Nobody grows it?

Hi, just receveid a Vanda foetida as a gift for Christmas.
Can't find any info about growing. So I'm here to ask: normal Vanda conditions? Bright light, warm and heavy food?

I try to avoid getting too close to any organism with the species name "foetida"!

foetida - In Portuguese it is said fétida, it means that it smells really bad.

In the case of this Vanda it is called "The bad smelling Vanda" due to the heavy creosote smell of this species.
Orchidwiz doesn't say much: grow is Southern Sumatra in bright indirect light conditions.
Nothing more.

See IOSPE(doesn't add much more).

Can't add anything on its care, I have the same references as everybody else, that don't say much (but your guess on care sounds reasonable for its tropical origin). But when it blooms, I'd love to know if it lives up to its name!

I got one in an auction (for minimum opening bid) back in August. It does fine in intermediate conditions.

Now I understand why nobody else bid on it.

I suspect that this one falls into the category of "interesting" though the photo looks pretty enough...

A last thing, V. foetida is from Sumatra on the equator but in Sumatra it is mostly volcanoes and mountains (especially the North), and it induces mountainous range of distribution. Don't place it with "hot" growing Vandas. I think that in Turin it won't be difficult to provide more cool environment. otherwise, yes it has to grown as all other Vandas. The fragrance is not strong and not as bad as the name could you make you think.
