Default Neofinetia falcata Shunkyuden

This past weekend I attended the National Capital Orchid show and arrived early on the first morning. Last year I discovered the members table had a few Neofinetia so I wanted to check the assortment this year, fingers crossed.

There were a dozen Neos at this table and immediately I found the Shunkyuden as it has one open flower and two buds. You can’t miss these wonky blooms.

There were nice Neos this year, most of which I already own so I was very conservative and only purchased the one. I did however, help a nice woman with many questions about Neos and she purchased two for herself. She wanted a Neo with colored flowers and there were two Shutennou available, she was thrilled. She also chose a nice Tamakongo. She thought my Shunkyuden was a beautiful plant with an ugly bloom!

I also purchased a couple of plants from J&L, a Masdevallia nidifica and two Macroclinium aurorae. Long story but my last Macroclinium is struggling to hang on and I wanted to try again. Cordelia was as friendly and helpful as always. My daughter had a great time and added a few plants to her collection as well.

Here is the lovely Shunkyuden!

I love the wackiness of Shunkyuden blooms, and I considered getting one earlier this year, but I had other Neos above it in my Neo wishlist. The good news is that it's now at the top of the list! My collection goals are to have diversity in leave type/color, but also bloom diversity.

I'm not at all familiar with Macroclinium, I'll have to look up the genus.

This had been my goal as well until I found the bean leaf Neos, then I wanted as many as I could find. The Shunkyuden has flowers very much like Seikai, wish mine would bloom. I looked at a large Shunkyuden at Al’s a few months ago and knew I had to have one. I believe his plant was several hundred dollars and many growths, covered in wonky blooms.

I hope you find one, this plant is small yet with two growths. I was happy to have found it at the show.

The Macroclinium are amazing tiny orchids with fascinating blooms. The two new plants are much larger than my current, weak plant. I hope these two will be happier. You should check them out, a bit hard to find though Andy’s has them as well as J&L.

bit late to getting to reply but Love the Shunkyuden, eventually I'll get one. I told myself I wouldn't order from satomi list that just came out but did anyway and got what I call a rather random variety with a wonky flower. Can't remember name at moment. But look forward to it. has your shunkyuden settled in by now?

I LOVE macrocliniums. In fact I have quite a few, they then tend to do very well for me. They all seem to repeat bloom off spikes for quite a few weeks or more. I have them in my orchid tanks, fairly close to the fan, medium light. I used to keep them dryer but find they do better when kept wetter and high humidity, but not sure I'd keep them wetter if they weren't near the fan. I do know a good grower who keeps them in a glass cylinder with no air flow and does very well with them. Because I have limited plants that can go right next to the fans I keep them where they are at.

The Shunkyuden has adjusted well, still has one wonky flower. I hope to see it flower again next season. I did not order from Satomi this time but I was sure tempted. I honestly don’t have any room on my Neo stand unless I come up with a way to hang pots from the side while still giving them sufficient light. The top shelf doesn’t have any plants on it and if I could add light without it looking unattractive, I would have space for several more Neo pots! I have about 50 Neos now so maybe I should chill out for awhile. The weather is nearing that time of year where I hate to have plants shipped anyway.

Macrocliniums are so cool! I hope these new plants continue to grow and flower. I have my plants in the greenhouse shelf under lights with a fan constantly running. They seem to be fine after a month. These two are bigger plants than the first one was so hopefully they will not decline as it has. I’ve not lost it yet!

Please post pictures of your new acquisitions from Satomi, I’m sure I’ll be jealous!

50?!! OMG, either that sounds like a lot or maybe I don't have a real collection yet! LOL

Must be a real joy looking at the all of them, totally jealous... and ok I don't feel bad for having like 25 or so... or ordering the recent three.
