Neofinetia, Daisonishiki 大壯錦

[Hakumin]

Daisonishiki (aka Daishogun) is a variegated bean leaf variety bred using Tamakongo in its background. Like Tamakongo, it usually gets the stout, short flowers that is typical of many bean leaf varieties.

Occasionally though, an error in the floral meristem occurs and the last flower of the spike will develop in a strange way that involves the production of numerous floral bracts that have partially taken on the appearance of tepals, usually terminating with a small and deformed flower.

Often times this is called a Danzaki 段咲き flower, but the development is quite different from other varieties that are better known for Danzaki flowers such as Shunkyuden. In those cases, the column is mutated to form extra petals, but in this case, the mutation happens prior to the formation of the bud itself, and the column of the terminating flower, while reduced, is still present.

Just another one of the interesting quirks that some Neo varieties can have.

Not always. It’s not super common, and usually it’ll bloom with all normal flowers.

Not only beautiful and varied, from leaf to leaf, variegation but also unusual pale yellow root tips.

Hakumin it is amazing! I agree, the pale yellow root tips are unusual in my limited experience. This is a very beautiful variegated bean leaf, you are lucky to have this in your collection. Is this a reliable bloomer? Has it been a strong plant for you? I would love to add a variegated bean leaf some day, yours is exceptional. Wow, tanks for showing the entire plant!

Since I've only had this for less than a year, I can't really answer those questions from my own experience, but from what I have heard about it is that it is a strong grower with few issues. Blooming seems to be no better or worse than other neos.

Ooof, love this guy, wow. While back was going to ask you post a picture of the whole plant/ leaves and I get on here and there it is! You order this from Korea vendor, or from satomi?
