Rapid double tap to expand.

Two variegated neos which could not be more different.

The first above is N Kinkabuto, a totally confused chaotic shima variegated plant which really doesn't know what it wants to do. Purchased in June 2013 from Satomi at an Orchid Fest in Neptune NJ for only $120. The sale was quite interesting, as the price tag on it was not the typical sticker on the plastic stick in tag but was a faded partially wrinkled paper label stuck onto one of the leaves. When I went to pay I could tell she was dismayed that she had not removed the ancient price and upped it considerably higher, but what could she do. So I got a bargain.

The second above is N Aojiku Fugaku, a subdued beauty purchased from James Rose of Cal Orchid for $40 in January 2009 which is when I started to get serious about growing neos. The variegation is known as chirifu and is subdued but when I purchased it, the variegation was even more subdued but it attracted my attention as being something really different.

One aspect about this hobby, rarely mentioned, is that many purchases are so memorable that you remember the circumstances under which they occurred.

That usually means that she had just recently imported it just before it was sold, and didn't have a chance to make her usual label for it.

Thanks Hakumin, more knowledge being conveyed.

I am not editing my original post to correct this so followers can understand this exchange.

I am glad I brought it up thereby giving me more insight into the purchase which I always believed was one of my best. Now I can see even more why.

Very nice variegation on N Kinkabuto. Wish I had more room for the larger neos, not as many interesting beans. Still enjoying the ones I have.

Variegated bean leafs with some exceptions, notably Kinkujacu, are insanely priced. It would be cheaper for you to get a monster house sized RV to expand your growing area and then buy a nice collection of normal sized variegated neos instead of squeezing in some variegated bean leafs into your current RV.

I guess I will struggle along without any variegated ones. Maybe I will find a bargain someday.

There was a Magatama on Satomi’s July list. A single growth with 7 leaves, no variegation, roots not visible. The price is $300.00

The plant pictures are probably still showing on her Facebook list.

Shoreguy, beautiful chaos and beauty! Gorgeous.

Thanks Patty, but I think I will get more experience before paying that much for a neo. Hakumin that Magatama picture with variegation and ruby roots is magnificent. Would defiantly be a prize to be in anyone collection.

BJ, I will enjoy these little beauties online only. My modest collection keeps me happy and that’s what it’s all about for me.

I agree, the pictured plant is magnificent!

Like the thread title... the kinkabuto is stunning, and the aojiku fugaku is wonderful... I love my own of that one. i have my doubts how respected that variety is but I find it so special in its subdued striping and soft gradation of greens in the leaves. Can't complain about its vigor also. anyway, great growing!

I've going to Cal orchid for years and almost always just pass over their Neo's, I mean I looked at them and always admire them but just didn't pay attention to what I was really looking at... Of all the things I've chatted with James about I don't think I've ever asked him about his neos... I even remember one year looking at what I know now is shunkyuden and thinking oh that's a funny interesting flower. lol.
