Vanda Cherry Blossom 'Omega' Male
Default Vanda Cherry Blossom 'Omega'

A new acquisition from Diamond Orchids. Very different in appearance from the 'Santa Cruz Sunset' clone in both color and shape. These flowers favor the ampullaceum parent much more strongly in shape than the 'Santa Cruz Sunset':

Those blooms are totally different to my Cherry Blossom - would never know it was the same cross. How big are the blooms?

Blooms are about 3- 3.5 cm in diameter. Here's a current pic of my other clone, admittedly a bit past its prime. The blooms are a bit larger in diameter, but I suspect blooms of 'Omega' are more massive by a fair piece.

Your other clone has the same shape as mine, I guess the difference is due to which parent is the pollen donor.

There's a woman from Australia I speak to on FB who has quite a few different clones. I should hear from her late tonight. And btw, if you think this one is so different from yours, imagine one with a large Vanda, rambling sort of growth habit!

Taxonomists now say that Neofinetias are Vandas. However, not all Vandas are Neofinetias.

Your Vanda is not a Neofinetia and therefore your posting should have been placed in the Vanda section of the Orchid Board and not in the Neofinetia section.

Placing it correctly would give you a greater, and more responsive and appreciative audience.

My Vanda is a hybrid of a plant which was once called Ascocentrum ampullaceum, crossed with another plant which was once called Neofinetia falcata. Both are now considered members of the genus Vanda. If you took the time to read the fine print regarding which plants belong in this sub-forum, you'd discover something interesting. That my post is in exactly the right forum.

I now see what you are referring to and according to the rules, you are correct. I do find the rules could have been more precisely written.

I suspect that the rules were meant to include in the Neofinetia category Neofinetia hybrids such as hybrid Kibanas, Yubaes, and assorted “Neofinetias” in name only with small amounts of red or pink. That is, hybrid plants that look like Neofinetias but have coloration other than the normal white.

I don't believe the intent was to include plants such as yours which have little or no resemblance to Neofinetias even though Neofinetias are included in their background. One final point, Neofinetia growers value the structure and occasional variegation of the vegetative growth often as much and sometimes even more than the flowers. There is no reference to the vegetative growth of your plant.

However based on the rules as stated, you are correct in your placement in this section, however unfortunate.

I still maintain that placement of your post, even if not according to strict reading of the rules, in another vanda section, would give you a larger, more responsive, and appreciative audience. Isn't that what you want?

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken especially when not written to properly achieve the goal intended.

Beautiful blooms, and I didn't realize that there was so much variation in shape and color in this hybrid.

About the discussion on whether this is an appropriate sub forum, yes it is. Are other subforums also appropriate? Yes. Regarding rules about what can be posted in a subforum, I would not call them rules. Forum guidelines simple say to post in an appropriate place and if a thread can go in multiple subforum's, it's the OP's choice. Anything listed in the title and subtitle of the subforum (Neofinetia falcata and its hybrids) can be posted in here. I was already an orchidboard member when this subforum was created, and the only aim at the time was to have all Neofinetia related discussions in one easy to find place. It was not intended to be an exclusive area for 'pure' Neofinetia plants only.

I went through a few pages of threads in this section and there are other people who posted about this same cross, as well as other hybrids (Neostylis, Darwinara), and there were no negative reactions. So there is nothing wrong with this thread being here.

It was not intended to be an exclusive area for 'pure' Neofinetia plants only.
Point of clarification. I never said that this section was meant to be for 'pure' Neofinetias only but to be inclusive of Neofinetia hybrids such as Neofinetias in name only including Yubae, hybrid Kibanas, and a myriad of “Neofinetias” of dubious parentage with colored flowers, all resembling pure Neofinetias in basic flower shape and vegetative habit.

Indeed if I can only get my Neofinetia (in name only) Yubae to bloom, I am going to post it here.

I also hope my posting created no hard feelings as it was meant to be constructive to get postings to the largest audience. If it created hard feelings, I apologize.
