Beniougi with Pink Flowers
Default Beniougi with Pink Flowers

Aloha All,

'Beniougi' has been one of my favorite cultivars due to it's easy growing and red variegation. I came home today to find that the most recent flowers have a good bit of pink. I suspect that they will fade a bit as they mature, but it's still a nice feature to add the list of features this plant has.

All other spikes on this plant have had pure white flowers (another spike of flowers is just fading away now). I'm not sure if the pink flowers have to do with this particular growth or just the right environmental circumstances this year.

Sorry for the low quality pics. If the flowers keep their colour, I will try to get some better images up.

Those are very pink! Before getting down to the photos I was imagining them to be just slightly tinged.

Very interesting. Beniougi is a terrific plant when normal but yours goes well beyond that. Not only the pink on the current spike but also the tepals are more rounded than typical. Did the other white blooms have rounded tepals or were they more elongated like a typical Neo?

Don't apologize for the quality of the pictures, absolutely nothing wrong with them and the plant makes up for any incorrectly perceived issues of quality.

Thank you for posting.

Beniougi should actually have quite normal looking flowers for a Neo: 富貴蘭(紅扇の花) - 気まぐれMOCO

I have a suspicion coming from personal experience as well as a few things that a breeder has told me.

Did you use any fungicides, or any disease control agents on your plant?

There is one class of fungicides that has this side effect as well as others, especially on neos.

Hakumin, you're incredible. It never occurred to me that a pesticide would affect the flowers like that, and YES, I used a broad spectrum pesticide about 2-3 weeks ago.

The plant (acquired from Satomi) has been a reliable bloomer for the past several years and the flowers were always normal. I was excited to think that this new growth could have mutated toward pinker flowers.... But it is also impressive how you identified a potential cause for the colouration right off the bat. Still one of my favorites and I will enjoy the pink flowers while they last.

Thanks again for the help.

The flowers are just opening, I’m guessing that when they fully open, the flowers will look much more typical (both in shape and colour). I will post more pics as they develop.
