New Neofinetia Yoroidoushi and Benisuzume

Prices are per plant, and most are 1-3 growth plants. The guy is super honest, he sent me lots of photos last night. It does seem like he has a GH of some sort. I don't know if he can 'prove' that the Manjushage will be 3 spurs since he's only had these plants a few weeks. I'm hesitant to buy one though, until I've successfully bloomed some cheaper Neos, I think I'll stay away from the mid and high price plants.

Do you recognize the printed labels? I've seen them on OB before, but can't remember what grower they come from.

I wish Matt was still around on OB, he's such a great Neo resource... I'm curious if any in the list do better in warm conditions than others since I have no where cool (other than right up against a window) to put my Neos for the winter.

Wow Camille these look great! I would definitely grab that nice Kirinmaru, very nice. The Tamakongo looks good too and I like the Kinyuko though I’m unfamiliar with that plant.

Some of the ones listed I could not find any information doing a simple google search. It really is a shame the experienced Neo nuts are no longer around, what happened to Matt? He is so knowledgeable and helpful, I’m sure he could help you with your questions.

I’ve seen the white tags before though I do not know the vendor.

As for temperatures, I believe these plants, for the most part, have the same requirements. I am not exactly providing cool winter temperatures, just crack the window a bit in the room I grow them and I’ve closed off the heat vent. I have cut back my watering. I still have plants with active roots growing.

I visited Al’s a couple of weeks ago and he had a Kibana in bloom! He had a couple others flowering as well. His greenhouse is warm and humid and he has next to nothing for lights, natural daylight. I asked him about his watering in the winter and he said he waters once a month. The humidity is very high and he heats with wood. His Neofinetia are beautiful, big and healthy and for winter temperatures he has a torn area, very small, in the skin of the greenhouse. The torn area allows the Neofinetia area to stay somewhat cooler than the remainder of the greenhouse. Lol, he has his Neofinetia collection placed where he can keep them a bit cooler. It works for him, so I’m in hopes my plants will be fine in our dining room with the window cracked a bit. I recently changed my lights from CFLs 5000k to T5 HO 6500k. My first winter dormancy so I’m a bit nervous, I will not let my plants go a month between waterings. They are already drying faster with the furnace on and we’ve not had much cold yet.

Good luck with your buying decision, grab as many as you can! Buying bean leaf plants really limits me as there are not many available.

From what I read this evening, lack of cold won't prevent them from blooming. Instead they will tend to bloom more frequently but with lower bloom counts per blooming than if they just bloomed once after a proper winter rest.

I'm thinking of buying 3, maybe 4 if I can overrule the rational side of my brain. I also want to get some 4 or 5A sphag that he has, but that stuff is expensive; 20€ for 100g.

I've managed to narrow it down a bit. I want a Shutenno. Very common type, but I've been wanting a pink flowering Neo for ages. I want a variegated plant, it'll be either Higashidemiyako or Gojo Fukurin. Leaning towards the Gojo. For my bean leaf, I'd like Tamakongo or Kirin Maru (in an ideal world, both). I'm hesitating to add a yellow tiger stripe Neo to the list (Kinyuko or Jitsugekko).

I'll save the green flowering Neos for another time, I read that the green color depends a lot on cultural conditions, so I'll wait until I have some experience growing Neos.

And Kibana! I want that too! It's not a pure Neo falcata, but I love the yellow flowers.

I just read something very interesting about our Yoroidoshi plants, while searching for Neo info. On another forum, in a thread from 2015, someone was told by Kristen from NWO that Yoroidoshi very rarely blooms, she managed once. Matt confirmed that it's difficult to get it to bloom, and added that it also is a terminal spiking plant, so once a fan has spiked, that's it. Guess I'll enjoy for the foliage only, it is very nice luckily!

Hahaha you’ve got it bad! The rational side of my brain tells me to load up that box and only pay for shipping once! Even when buying from Al, only one trip or the other rational...it could be gone next time!

The Shutennou is a nice big Neo, one of my firsts and Al talked me into it because of the pink flowers. The Benisuzume that I purchased along with the Yoroidoushi also has pink flowers.

You sound exactly like me, in the beginning of my madness I only wanted one Neo. That wore off quickly and I rationalized that I NEEDED one of each. A bean leaf, a variegated, a tiger. Then the “I want them all” hit and I filled my small bakers rack.

I would like to add the Kibana even though it is a hybrid, it’s beautiful.

The Yoroidoushi, I think it is a really neat plant as is. If it flowers and the fan dies I would not be very happy. I find that odd. The plant was originally named Chousentetsu, not sure why the name changed. I’ve seen pictures of nice large plants, very cool.

I was supposed to get 3. At the last minute I added another, and I'm now 100€ poorer. My wallet probably can't handle another one!

Unfortunately I don't think I'll see his greenhouse. He seems to have his Neo business as a side job (probably to fund his hobby and nice greenhouse!). Since I start early in the morning and leave work around 3pm to avoid rush hour traffic, I'm meeting him at his place of work.

The white printed labels are from Barampungranwon in South Korea. They export extensively internationally and if possible, ordering directly from them is one of the best ways to get some of the best quality neos for the best prices, even after the cost and hassle of import permits and paperwork.

If you go on facebook, there are two very good quality groups dedicated to Neos. One is called Neofinetia International with many experienced growers from around the world including several English speaking Japanese and Korean growers. The other is called Neofinetia falcata, which Matt is the administrator for. Combined, they are the absolute best sources of information about Neos in english anywhere. Pretty much any question you have about neos, regarding culture, variety information, history, etc. can be asked in those groups for an almost immediate answer.
