Charles, if you can look at them with a magnifier, compare what you see to Google images of mealybugs. I just don't like those things on your plants. Turn one over to see the underside - if you see anything that looks like an insect (little legs, feelers, antennae) don't worry about Google images, just treat.
Safer insecticidal soap spray is less toxic to people than most other means. It can stink, though. If I were you I'd carry the plants to the bathroom tub and spray them there, then give them a spell before taking them back to your bedroom.
If you want to avoid even that, however, clean the plants with rubbing alcohol and dust them with Diatomaceous Earth. What the alcohol doesn't kill will be gruesomely killed by the DE.
