I really don't know what the secret is. From what I understand higher light (without burning the leaves) definitely helps. However I have two variegated neos where more light doesn't really help (getsuden. Asahiden) whereas more light for higashidemiyako , kujaku nishiki, Fuji nishiki seem to work. I wish I knew the secret formula.
