The 'moss mound' is traditional, but not at all necessary.
I grow all of my mature plants (abt 15 plants) in net pots (3" or 4", depending upon plant size) with a spaghnum/bark mix. My seedlings are in 2" plastic pots with a mostly spaghnum mix. When they are large enough, they graduate into the net pots.
Another member of North Jersey Orchid Society grows his considerable collection either mounted on small treefern plates, or in small clay pots.
Lastly, Glen Decker of Piping Rock has a monster plant (many dozen fans). He placed it on top of an inverted clay pot, and it has totally overgrown that pot. In effect, it is growing on a pot, in nothing.

They aren't fussy!
That is growing on slate tiles, maybe for 8 months. I have another experiment going on but I'm not ready to unveil it. The roots are firmly attached. Admittedly, it needs more light and I'll move it when I reorganize my space.

So in other words it easily adapts to a variety of growing methods. Is this correct? Now I have a few options to choose.

Yes!
Adjust your watering/feeding. Water more when actively growing and less when it's not. Dry in between.

I keep telling people orchids can grow on the kitchen table with little or nothin and just look at the money tme and trouble spent burying em bulbs and rhizomes in rocks bark moss and no telling what else just so we can water and kill em..And you are right orchids are not fussy its the people that are fussy about them.

i grow mine in plastic pots with holes drilled in them with some large bark, i spray the roots every day and water them twice a week.
I really like the slate idea! only wonder if it does not get very warm in summer time?

So with the way it is situated in the pot, you are not shooting for it to be snug. It is only proportion in looks? I have a nicer looking clay pot than the plain one it came in.
