Leslie, thanks for the recipe and the process for taking care of these leaf problems. Rarely do Neofinetia get insects...I have had three Neos that got mealy bugs. I took all three plants, waterred them thoroughly and then I pored a solution of 1:1 distilled water/hydrogen peroxide over the wet plants, then I dried each leaf with cotton swabs.
It is my pleasure to share my experience after more than 15 years of growing neos!
For mealy bugs, I suggest using ISA and trounce. Here is process:
1. Clean all leaves of the affected neos with cotton swabs dabbed in ISA. Make sure u get at leaf axils inside tsuke, root junctions and root tips.
2. Spray with Trounce (mix 50 mL in 1L RO water). Drench plant.
3. Repeat every 3-7 days for 2-3 weeks if necessary. Do in early morning before sun is too strong.
As the leaves grow out, the one with a small dark mark, well, fortunately it stayed as a small bar mark and the rest is growing out clean, although that entire fan looks badly desiccated.
The other mark, which was a real concern, turned out to be a real concern. Dang it!
The rest of the growth is all black.
I'm thinking of cutting that entire fan off, although it has three keikis attached to it.
Oh, well...
If the blackened area is within the stem, you will need to cut off growth ... Sadly you may lose all the babies but keep the severed growth in high humidity. Spray all parts cut with hydrogen peroxide. Then when dry spray with ASA.
You can get uncoated aspirin in drug stores. Ask the pharmacist for the 325 mg tablets uncoated.
