Hi all! Got a neofiNetia falcata with cold damage on the leaves. Started with areas of shallow pitting which progressed to deeper pitting. Leaves continued to desiccate and several have dropped. Generally the pattern of dropping is from the most recent, young leaves first. The roots still look okay ( not great and actively growing like my other neo, but not dead yet). I've read that sometimes the roots take longer to show the effects of cold damage? Anyways, wondering if this lil' guy has a chance of survival assuming (hopefully) the roots are okay even if most of the leaves have been lost. rate this is going...I'm thinking it might lose all of the leaves!

Sorry, no pics at this time... The tapatalk app on my phone only occasionally successfully uploads the pictures... . I'll keep trying...

Hard to determine a course of action without pics. If any tissue is soft/mushy, remove with a sterile blade. Small pitting might stop with rubbing alcohol.

If leaves are desiccated, sound like something else. Cold damage turns tissue to mush then a rot sets in.

Here's how the plant initially looked from my previous thread about it...

Neofinetia falcata shutennou?

Generally, the leaves would turn brown at the tip (not really mushy or anything though) and then work its way in. I usually snip the tip off is I see this with sterile scissors and tip with cinnamon but the leaves continue to dry out and eventually fall off. The base of the leaf would be all shriveled and blackish...definitely dry though.

I don't know what it is but did you contact Flora Peculia like NeofinetiaCanada suggested?

Yes! They were nice enough to offer a replacement and allowed us to keep this one. I've yet to let an orchid die yet... Hoping I'll be able to save this one...

Hi Atzau, the unfortunate event of cold exposure to your Shutenno has indeed stressed the plant. In my experience of plants going through the freeze, the ones that survive are the ones that have live roots. As suggested, cut off all the dead leaves and roots, dip in 3% hydrogen peroxide, air dry, and lay it on clean damp moss in covered container. Put in shade or under lights in warm area away from sun for about 2-3 weeks. If the stem is still alive it will sprout a new growth and new roots. That may save the plant... Good luck!!!

Ok, done. It's in a little green house on top of some damp sphag in a nice warm place. Don't know how much light is getting though... Maybe I'll try and set up a light. Hope it does well! Keeping my fingers crossed.
