I have one neo hybrid ( neo falcate crossed with lou sneary blue bird) and it won't flower. no idea what's going on because it has 5 growths already!
I have a many-fanned Shutenno x Shoyjo - had this one 3 years; listed as, and appeared to be, bloom size when I got it; no evidence of having bloomed previously.

I have two Kisyu Ryokufu (came 2 in one pot); each has one likely bloom size fan, and a few small fans - I've had them 2 years; one was in spike when I got it.

Suikaden (bean leaf);1 very good size fan, a couple "medium size" fans, and a few small ones; I've had it one year; it has what appears to be the remains of an old spike on the biggest fan.

and, Shutenno - 1 good size (bloom size) fan, a couple small fans, 3-4 new ones recently; I got this in spike last year ...

so ... *sigh*

Ok, so these need to clump up a bit in general before starting to flower.

I think I saw a hybrid of schutennou & soto sold with a flowering spike on a single fan. crazy!

Guess what? I just bought one of that hybrid, but I think the flower might just come out white instead of dark pink or purple "throat".
The entire plant including the base of the leaves show no sign of dark purple pigmentation, but I could be wrong. I hope I am because I already have a white flowering neo, which has dark base at the leaves, so I really have no clue as to what the flower color will come out, but I would love to have something with purple throat.

It should arrive tomorrow! so excited!!!

Congratulations on your new acquisition NYC! I hope you get that colorful flower you described. I think one way to ensure more color is to grow up your Neofinetia in a little brighter light--almost Cattleya light. Give it a good winter's cool down and a little water, and by next spring, you'll probably have those dreamed about dark pink or purple.

Your plant is gorgeous, Sonya! Several of my Neos are in spike and I am itching to see the flowers because this is their first year with me.

My neo and its hybrids are all getting cooked in the sun pretty much! lol

One BIG problem is that the color of neo (even the green flowers) is supposed to intensify with cooler temperature, but I simply cannot provide that when they bloom in June or later, because then it is already very hot here. lol

Funny thing is some of the flowers on my white Amami island neo show hint of pink on the petal tips.

There is one hybrid of shutennou and soty in bloom sold on eBay, and the flower is bubble gum pink.
It's pretty but it is not what I'm picturing.
Maybe I should just get a straight shutennou, which turns out quite fast growing and one of the cheapest neos!

Even then, neos are mostly seed grown, right? Then the color might also vary I assume? hmm
headache...lol

NYC, I think you are correct that most Shutennou 朱天王 are seed grown as they are easy to propagate. Because of this you do see many Shutennou available for reasonable price. Another often available purple flowered plant is Momohime 桃姫. I think Momohime is also seed propagated.
