There's an Historic Greenhouse nearby & their annual orchid sale started today. I got there early & picked up a pair of Neofinetia falcata because I couldn't decide on either & the letters 'wtfnyolo' were all that came to mind...

I love these plants! They're adorable, especially the variegated one. I read that variegated species are harder to grow, is this true?

In general, folks say yes because there is less surface area and less plant providing photosynthesis. However, if a plant is kept in good conditions, it's hard to tell if they grow slower or not, unless they're almost all white.

What great healthy well grown Neos I like both of them way to much....I'll bet you got them for a steal. I hate your greenhouse & I'm jealous of all of you guys who can see your Neos IRL before you buy them.

Very beautiful plants! Thank you for sharing your acquisitions. The nearest Neofinetia vendor to me is New World Orchids--two hours, 15 minutes, and around 20 seconds--longer if you get stuck behind a gaggle of Harleys or Honda Gold Wings.

And yet, you manage to bag your share of these precious plants, Ginger! LOl

Varieged leaves have less chlorophyll'ed tissue so are not as efficient in energy use. They require more light yet balanced so the leaves don't burn (I'm trying to get the right balance right now).

I actually think beanies are harder. Or rather they are sloooooooooooooooooow.

Two especially nice plants and I see the Hime-kaioumaru is one with a mountain shape tsuke (I think; doesn't look like ocean wave from the pic), as opposed to the most common crescent shape.

Hmmm. Oddly, a recent japaneseorchids ebay listing for Hime-kaioumaru says it has crescent tsuke.

Come to find out one of the ladies that works at the greenhouse, super nice I met her before, but she wasn't around b/c she's in Japan at the moment.... Yea, her & her husband have been growing Neos for over 3 decades & they have a greenhouse of their own filled with specimens, so I was told. "Oh, she knows all about what the names mean & everything", said the sweet lady at the register.... YAHTZEE!

Anyway, from the last OS meeting I went to where they had their annual auction (my first time at any OS meeting) I could tell there were other Neo nuts locally (some on this very board ) so I arrived at the sale (opening day mind you, a Friday no less) 15 maybe 20 minutes after they opened, I've been waiting. Even had one younger gentleman (mid-30s also, around my age) literally over my 6'4" shoulder eyeing the plant in my hand before purchase (I didn't put it down; sorry man, don't know you yet) all up in my personal space. Nice enough guy (wears his keys on a ring over the front pocket of his jeans), we chatted about a prismatocarpa he was having trouble blooming.
But he can't haz my precious! lol
So I think I got the best of the bunch unless they had more stashed. There was a larger Tenkei-fukurin as well, very nicely grown, but in the end I went with what you see above & they're great I'm very happy with them.
