The Neos look great but they are among ginko fruit (first link). Fallen, rotting ginko fruit smell strongly of doggie doo.

To be honest, I don't remember when the fruits rippen. I'm just very wary of Ginkos because of that. (If you like the look of the trees, get the male trees!)

I assume theyd fruit in the fall but these guys bloom in the spring, which is why i mentioned it. To my knowledge, I've never seen a ginkgo!

The fruits ripen and fall for several months into Autumn around here and ours smell more like fresh vomit. Quite a few of them in some parts of Center City (our downtown) Philadelphia. Fortunately, where I live now I don't have occasion to walk the streets where they live as often as I used to. Some sidewalks are so thick with the fallen fruits that I was in the habit of crossing the street to avoid stepping in them.

I've also seen Asians here collecting the Ginkgo fruits; I believe they just use the seed.

By the way, planting what seems to be a male tree is NOT a sure-fire way to avoid producing the stinky fruits.

Gingko: The Tree that Can Change Sex

However, once mature, more than one homeowner has been unpleasantly surprised when their formerly "male" Gingko suddenly starts bearing the squishy fruits, dropping them all over the sidewalk, street, cars, etc. In fact, in some US states, this "sex change" is considered good reason for removing the tree.

How does this sex change happen?

By grafting. Take a young female Gingko, cut the top off just above the ground. Now graft a young male Gingko onto the stump left from the female tree.

Result? A male Gingko. Plant it, watch it grow, enjoy its fossil-like leaves and growth pattern. But when mature, the grafted female stump sometimes can cause the "male" top portion to revert to its female roots!
