What Happens When A Plant Looses Its Central Leaf?
This Furan Yasuri Takakuma 鑢高隈 arrived in bloom on 07/05/13. It was lovely and I have enjoyed it tremendously (along with the rest of my Neos). As you can imagine, I take an inordinate amount of time looking and caring for these plants. This past Saturday, I checked in with them to see how they wee doing. All appeared fine. Yesterday, before going to church, I checked in with them and noticed the central leaf of this plant was completely yellow. I picked it up to examine it closely and it promptly fell off!
What happens now? Will the plant throw another fan? Will it grow around it?
This is a photo of the plant today. I did not notice this before but the two tiny growths, one visible to the left of the main plant has also died. The roots look healthy. I might have to take this apart when I get home from work this after noon.

Thats really odd. My gut tells me that the crown had previous damage (the leaf looks perfectly green in your second photo). I don't suspect rot but actual physical damage....weird. Have you contacted the vendor?

Hello syspila, that is a good idea about heat. The most tender part of a Neo is the growing and youngest part. I am thinking like you, I checked the other plants that came with it. None of them have the same problem, in fact those plants are doing really well.
Right behind the picture is another variegated Neo, and that one is incredible. It is blooming and growing all kinds of growth.
Ryan, when the plants arrived. All of them but this one, came through the shipping process. But this Yas, was dried out and out of its pot. I re-inserted it back into its pot, and watered it. The rest of its companions were all fine. This one, just seemed odd, but at the time, I didn't think it was so odd, it would be loosing its new leaves in 17 days!
Do you think I should contact New World? Glenn is in the UK now, so I do not know if he'll get an email while abroad. I do not want to be such a bother. I'll email him about it and tell him to follow up when he returns. Do you think that'll work?

I lost my big Amami to a very fast moving (gut feeling) bacterial infection. One day, everything is fine, next day bits falling off from a yellowing tsuke (roots looked great). It was so fast I don't know if any treatment would have worked.
There is stuff on the market that treat some fungal and bacterial rots but I don't know how fast they work nor how effectively. Do keep the affected tissue clean. Perhaps H2O2, dab with IPA?

Its just so odd... the center of the plant's vitality is in that new growth and its gone now. I'd send what you've told us here to Glenn. My guess is Glenn would at the very least have suggestions for you and at the most, send you a new plant. The plant looks fine to me, but having a green leaf turn and pop off like that is weird.
Do you suspect disease?

Thank you all for your advice. Ryan, I'll email Glenn and tell him what happened.

If you're worried it may be sick, just unpot it and give it a Physan bath. If that works, that particular fan won't continue to grow, but you'll still get new fans at the base of the plant. This has happened to a few plants I've had and I didn't have any problems.

How is your Neo doing now? Hope the physalis bath helped. I feel for you I lost a bunch of Phals from a bacteria. Sad
