Amami Furan Divide Into Smaller Plants?

Okay friends, this plant has a lot of fans, it is in bloom, and it has many roots. Once it finishes blooming, I know I will repot it into a bigger mound. The spaghnum moss is green and disintegrating.

The Amami Furan is the most common of all Neos. I acquired this plant and several others from this colleague of mine who has been promoted to an executive position in our company's Brasilian office. Brasil has strict import plant rules and he didn't want to bother with the paperwork. So I bought his 12 orchids--10 Neos and two Phalaenopsis japonica.

I need your opinion, should I cut the plant into smaller plants? I don't need more plants. I have never divided a Neo. I have divided Oncidiums but those plants are not quite as precious as these Neos.

Don't divide it. Let it grow to specimen size.

I agree with Pilot but when you take the old moss off some of the fans may come off too. You can either put them all together or pot them separately OR give them to another orchid lover! I am always trying to spread the word of these little beauties, I take some of mine to orchid society meetings and either give or sell to other members...Jean

I like this idea too Jean. When I repot it, if some of the growths fall off I'll repot into small pots and give them away to someone who would enjoy this special plant.

I agree with the others. Among Neos, an Amami Furan is probably your best chance for growing a big honking specimen plant in a reasonable number of years. Go for it!

I'm with the others - unless you have a reason for wanting to divide it, I'd leave it. I plan to NOT divide my monster Neo (4" pot, 13 fans, leafspan 7-8" individually) intentionally for the foreseeable future.
