What do you all think about the $99.99 Manjushage: single growth but in spike?

If it stays that low, its worth it if you have the patience for it to grow more fans. At least you know its a confirmed flower.

I agree. But of course it will get bid up substantially in all likelihood.

Thank you for posting that close up photo, Jayfar. I can see it much better. And my conclusion is......nope! Still does not look like Surusumi That texture you see can be seen on other neos as well near the base of the leaf, on the tsuke, etc. If you run your finger along the leaf of a true Surusumi, you can feel the shallow grooves. Sometimes, the distinctive markings are more easily seen on the bottom side of the leaf. There are lines of 2 different shades of green and one color feels more raised than the other when you touch the leaf. Also, there is some shine on certain parts of the leaf. Perhaps these photos will explain better:

It IS possible for variegation to change. It might improve on the new leaves or it also possible to lose the variegation on new leaves. Sometimes, culture isn't even the cause of the change, from what I've seen on my plants. If you start out with a plant that has poor variegation, it is still possible for the new fans to come out with great variegation. No guarantee though.

Tracy,
The pictures of Surusumi were great. You can see the grooves very well. What a neat Neofinetia. I also looked at your Fuukiran and Choseiran on flicker links. Wow! What a collection and what great photos. Japanese orchids obviously love your ministrations. Hats off!

Reasonably priced for manjushage. The fact that you can rest easy since it's a guaranteed 3-spurred plant is nice. But on the downside, that fan doesn't look that great to me.
