Today is the third day in a row for auctions on eBay from Seed Engei. There is this plant up for bid: "Neofinetia falcata: dark red flower-YUBAE 夕映え". It started out @ $59.99 and is now highest bid @ $102.50. Why is this particular hybrid so highly valued? I think the flowers look beautiful but that picture is from another plant.
Does anyone around here have a Yubae? How does your plant compare?

I think the reason is pretty well summed up in the item description:
Quote:
"YUBAE is a hybrid between dark yellow flower variety (hybridized with tropical orchid) and red flower variety (pure Neofinetia falcata/red flower).Produce very dark yellow color and also scarlet pink color on spurs, some of flower tips and backside of petals. Very popular because of those mixed colors of flower. Although they can not be called as true Fukiran because of their blood, Yubae is described in Fukiran books a lot and well-know. Fukiran does not have much flower variety so many of Fukiran hobbyists have enjoyed those hybrid variety as well."
|
Personally, I'm not getting into the hybrids at this point, focusing my limited, hardly-earned dollars on true Fukiran. But there are some compelling flowers among the hybrids, Yubae a great example, and I might be tempted in the future.

While Yubae is a great looking hybrid, I think some, probably many, people get into a bidding frenzy and end up paying a lot more than they should.

Thank you, Jayfar. I didn't really understand the phrase regarding "blood". I suppose the phrase, "if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it must be a duck!--does not apply to Neo ancestry.
Email from New World Orchids (Dr Glenn) states that he is on his way to England next Monday. So if anyone has a plant they need to buy from NWO, it will be awhile before you get your plant! BUT lucky English people will have a great time! If you are across the pond, you might want to see if you can still pre-order and have your plant delivered personally to England!

Yes! I think that is also part of it too. Amazingly this bidding frenzy has been going on for the last twelve hours. I'm going to watch this one tonight as it gets closer to the end.

I'm not bidding on that one. I have a so-so Akebono from the other night on the way. That one is in-bud, but the older leaves aren't particularly nice. Just an impulse buy and I didn't/wouldn't pay much.
Now there is a very nice plant I really want tonight, but I have a minor problem that could end up costing me. Auction ends at 10:27PM EDT, but that's just minutes after the time my train usually gets me to work. If the train runs late, as it is sometimes prone to do lately, due to a signal that chronically gets stuck on red just before my station, I would just miss putting in a late bid. So I've got to break from usual method and put in a high max bid before I leave for work this evening (and pray that it doesn't go anywhere near that high).
I guess the lesson here is that I should break down and get a mobile device. Would you believe a tier II tech with an ISP who doesn't even own a cell phone?

Wow, you are a gambler Jayfar. This plant? It is beautiful: NISHIDEMIYAKO 西出都 I hope you win it without having to pay too much! Good luck. I'll watch along to see how you do.

Yep, that one. The variegation looks really nice on this and I'd been wanting one of these for a while.
Then again the 3 growth in-bud one in their online catalog for 150 is pretty nice too. Decisions, decisions...
Oh, the catalog in-bud photo was taken June 19th, so that's probably all bloomed out.

Not Neos but did anyone notice the bidding on the Den. moniliformes? Talk about bidding frenzy!

Dendrobium moniliforme/-3 sets of sekkoku セッコク-- yes, started at $30 and now up to $79??? I haven't seen these "in person" but I am not as mesmerized by these plants as a single growth MANJUSHAGE 曼珠沙華 and I haven't seen this plant in person either.
