Jayfar brings up an interesting point. How much variability is the within a cultivar. To say another way will a average Hokage color up with different/better culture?

Part of the challenge collecting and growing Neofinetia is the variability of any variety. For example, several pages back on this thread, Jayfar mentioned that he has two plants that have tiger stripe but one plant is larger than the second plant of the same name: Kara-Nishiki. The second plant is smaller and it is hoped it will retain its diminutive size, as in this instance, a smaller plant is much more prized.
The Hokage and Taiga plant recently available also fall in the same kind of variability. I have a Hokage, it is a nice healthy plant, but so far, the scarlet roots and leaves have not appeared on this plant. It will probably develop scarlet leaves with more light. The roots will emerge when the weather gets consistently warmer.

Speaking Kouen, I just noticed there are two people bidding on this Kouen, it is now up to $37.00. I suppose they are not OB members?

At least one of the bidders is a member here . He hasn't posted on OB, but signed up here last month, at my suggestion, after I contacted him via facebook.

I am interested in learning more about neos - I should mention that I am primarily a cattleya grower. Would I cook them to death in my windows? ~A potential Neo lover

They're size makes them great for windowsill growers.

The flowers are fragrant. And they are easy to grow and have different leaf styles, root colors, and leaf variegation. I have my plants growing in bright light in Western facing window.
I looked at your list of orchids...Neofinetia require brighter light than Phalaenopsis...some people grow them in Cattleya light, but towards that brightness, caution should be taken as some of the variegated leaves may burn with that much light.
I promise you, that once you get a Neofinetia in the right growing conditions, this is a really easy plant to grow. So much easier than their larger cousins the big Vanda.

Provided that you harden the plants appropriately, and water accordingly, you can grow NF in full sun (in NJ).
For many years I brought all my Vandaceous plants outside on Memorial Day. They got 10 days under a lattice, then full sun (9 AM till sunset) through end of Sept. However, I would spray them down 2-3 times daily.

Good you mentioned "harden the plants". I do that too by putting mine in my screen in porch for a couple of weeks, then onto my north facing deck, getting a little more light and weather. Third step is to put the plants in full sun but under a shade cloth. Actually, I haven't done the third step, but will do so this summer season. This is how my friends at New World Orchids grow their Neofinetia.
