Pardon the really really really late reply on this--I've been away from the board for a while--not sure why--but I noticed this thread just now so I figure I'll answer the question since it hasn't been answered yet:


1. Ryokuhou - 緑宝 - Green Treasure

2. Kinboshi - 金星 - lit. Gold Star. Not to be confused with the same kanji with an alternate reading, Kinsei, which means Planet Venus. Kinboshi is also a word used as notation in sumo wrestling when a lower rank wrestler wins over a yokozuna, hence, dazzling victory. Vaguely similar connotation to the english idiomatic expression "an upset" when speaking of competitions. More info about the phrase on the wiki article: Kinboshi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3. Kinrokaku / Kinroukaku - 金鏤閣 - Gold Inlaid Palace? The translation is a bit of a stretch, but I guess that's what it's closest to meaning.

4. (Furan) Yasuri Takakuma - (風蘭) 鑢高隈 - Fuuran is simply the word for Wind Orchid and isn't part of the variety name. Yasuri Takakuma means Rasp High Corner? Also a stretch of a translation, but it simply means that it's a Rasp leaf version of the Takakuma variety. I know the question was given as "Takuma" but i'm pretty certain that it was a misspelling of Takakuma.

5. Awaharibeni / Awashinkou - 阿波針紅 - Awaharibeni is an alternate reading for Awashinkou. Awa is the old name for Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, haribeni/shinkou means needle-red. I assume this is a red tinged needle leaf. (beni means red, mame means bean)

Hello Hakumin! Glad you can post anything no matter how long ago it was. You had provided much information in threads of seemingly long ago. Some of the information is still accessible. Since I asked about these particular names, I have since gotten together with a person who speaks and writes Japanese. Some of the Neofinetia names are very old references and are no longer used in modern Japanese--as you had posted.

It means at least two things. Literally, it could be "Gold Star." But when somebody or team wins, it means "Victory." Naming of classic plants like Neofinetia often stems from literature, music, historical episodes, etc., so it may not translate well in English.

Yasuri is a tool (file), referring a rough surface of leaves?
Takakuma may refer to Takakuma Mountains in Kagoshima Pref.

5. Awaharibeni / Awashinkou - 阿波針紅
Beni is more like scarlet or crimson, I think
I made a comment, but mame does not necessary mean "bean." It is often used to describe something smaller and roundish.

I do not discourage people from grasping the meaning of names, but literal translation may not lead you anywhere.
