Glenn says he hasn't seen anything like it before and he's sent my pictures off to friends in Japan.

I must have gotten a very special plant. Not only did I get a bud with four spurs, but I got a plant that decided to throw pink spurs. If you look at the photos, the left most flower is a typical Manjushage flower with ever so light blush on the tips of the spurs. The middle flower has four spurs, also with very faint blushing on the spurs. The third flower decided to give me light green petals and darker blush spurs. What the heck!?!? I've never seen or heard of this before!

That is a very special plant! Lucky you. Please let us know when you hear what the Japnese growers think. Has Glenn seen the new photos?
Thanks for sharing them here.

That is truly spectacular. Satomi had told me about the 200,000$ neo, only one of its kind, perhaps you have the next 200,000$ plant!!!!

Beautiful Manjushage. The four spurred flower is very interesting. Please correct me if I'm wrong but it looks as though the extra spur is coming
from the sepal directly above the lip. I've been wondering about the formation of three spurs in Manjushage and the nearest I could find (in other orchids) is something called pseudo-pelorism or semi pelorism. Peloric flowers have three lips and pseudo-peloric flowers have one lip, but the other two petals are not normal and have some characteristics similar to the lip. The genetics of this in Phals appear to support the idea of a repressor gene (mads-box protein for the molecular biologists out there) that stops the petals from becoming lips, and in peloric varieties this gene is faulty. The idea is that pseudo peloric flowers may form from a similar mechanism. So your four spurred flower kind of throws a spanner in this idea !!
Thanks for posting !

That is beautiful and I can't wait to hear about mystery of this orchid; you have done some great growing. it is terribly valuable...is it growing in a greenhouse. I'm strictly a window sill grower and some lights so I always feel that I'm cheating my orchids out of a good life.
