A pair from the Shore Orchid Festival

I visited Satomi from Seed-Engei at the Shore Orchid Festival at Silva Orchids in New Jersey yesterday and picked up a nice pair for my collection.

I got Amanogawa;



And Rain-No-Hikari;



I almost added this one too...
Mangetsu



Unfortunately, it was a little above my budget for the month. You have no idea how gorgeous this plant was in person.

Woohoo! Score! I bet you're thrilled to add a couple new ones to your neo clan.

Yes, Mangetsu looks very nice. The green inner stripe on each leaf looks very thin and consistent. That one behind Mangetsu looks like it could be Kouen. Did you get a closer look at that one? Did it have much red variegation?

I think it was Kouen, but I'm not positive. I was so smitten with the Magetsu, I pretty much blocked out all the others on that rack.

As a side note, I talked to Satomi about carrying Kanuma soil since she had a few Cymbidiums there also. She was a little perplexed why I would want Kanuma and suggested bark and large perlite mixed but said she could get it in Japan for us if we really wanted it. Shoot her an e-mail if you are interested.

I'm thinking I may order a bag through her or from Dallas Bonsai. Ten Shin Gardens was next to her and had some awesome variegated Cymbidium Sinense in a pre-order box for someone. So he wrote the names on one of his cards and said he can ship to me when he comes back to the US in July.

They're beautiful! I got a few new Neos from her last weekend at SJ Orchid Exposition. My budget is very small, so nothing probably too exciting for the serious Neo enthusiasts, but I love them!

I understand why she would be perplexed. If you have a greenhouse to grow in or humidity at least 50% all year round, it's probably not a good idea to use Kanuma. Kanuma is said to have the moisture rentention of sphag moss so you'd be risking root rot with sinense and goeringii if you have good humidity or have time to water often.
Also, she's probably thinking we want the small or medium grade Kanuma. I need the large grade Kanuma because the small and medium grade does not allow enough air to the roots and does cause rot. I only use the medium grade for the top 1 inch of the pot. Ideally, I want to get some large grade Kanuma and medium grade Akadama. That's what I used for my goeringii 'Kinpa' and it had a huge mass of roots when I repotted a few days ago. I almost had to break the pot to remove the mass of roots. It's not the best medium for every growing condition but for mine, it seems to work well. So if you have good RH all year round, it might not be a good idea to try the Kanuma.

Nonsense! Seeing others Neos is always exciting. Especially if it's one they really treasure, like my very first Neo, a simple wild-type.

I got (hope I get the names right) Kishu-ryokufu (with buds, and found another tiny spike after I got home), Suikaden (bean leaf), Higashidemiyako (variegated).

Very nice! Suikaden is one of my favourites. I love the curve of the leaves... Like so many little Katana swords.
