Default What kind of Neo is this?

Can anyone tell me what I have here? This is my first Neofinetia falcata orchid. I got it from Oak Hill Gardens about 4 years ago.

The reason I ask what I have here is that it is so different from all my other Neos. The leaves are large course, and very stout. I thought it was an Anami furan until I got one of those and this plant doesn't look anything like my Anami furan.

What ever it is I've become very attached to it even though it has still not bloomed for me. It has such a unique form and character. I've even named it... Medusa

Norris, it looks like the axis is twisted, yeah? I would believe that it was originally an Amami furan seedling. There are all kinds of mutants that can come from Amami seedlings. That's why neos are so fun

It looks something like my Tsukenashi on steroids.

Very cool neo. I'd be attached to it too. Neofinetia falcata 'Medusa' is a perfect name.

Thanks Tracy for the reply. About it being twisted, it does have an odd growth that is twisted. I will try to get a photo up later to show you.

I do see similarities to yours, especially the way some of the leaves turn upwards.

Norris- I have a standard wild-type that flips up
at the leaf tips like yours as well. It looks pretty cool.

Yours looks very nice. And like Tracy said "Medusa" is a very appropriate name for it.

Cheers.
Jim

Yes Jim, yours is very close to how mine looks, right down to the color of the leaves and the course thick look of them. Did you happen to get yours from Oak Hill Gardens also?

No, not from Oak Hill but from Gwen Diaz; a fellow OB member. It was my first Neo. She didn't say where she got it from but did say it was basic Neo. falcata.

The tag on your plant only says Neo. falcata so I suspect it also is the basic wild type Neo. Still a really nice plant and the fragrance is to die for.
I'll be talking with the Oak Hill folks next weekend when I see them at the Shore Orchid Festival in Jersey next weekend. I'll ask.

Interesting plant. A number of mine would not bloom until I gave them a cold winter rest ... I guess not that easy in southern CA.
Cheers,
Tim
