Thanks Tracy!
I really need to learn Japanese. I already subscribe to Aqua Journal that Takashi Amano publishes so I can scape my aquariums to look like these:

Cheers.

Oooooh! I'd love to try it for a year. I'm finding I'm developing quite a thing for Japanese orchids Other than Neos, and Sedireas. How were you able to subscribe? I googled the journal and the only hit I got was through a service called Global Magazine which wanted something like $350 for a single year.
Cheers.

Jason told me about it. He subsribed too. He knows the lady who runs the magazine and that it was possibly going out of business. So he was hoping that more fans of native Japanese species would show their support. At the time, he contacted her and told her I was interested in subscribing. Your best bet is to call him at the store and talk to him directly if you're interested. He's off Wed, so call tomorrow. When I subscribed in 2010, it cost $200 for 1 yr subscription.
Someday, I'd like get my issues translated in English. There's info in there on how to properly pot up and grow Cym goeringii, unusual forms of Dend moniliforme that we will probably never see in the U.S., as well as other Japanese, variegated bonsai-like plants that are really cool. And of course lots of new, unusual neos that may never make it here to our part of the globe.

I really need to talk to Jason. I've discovered I've developed quite a thing for Japanese orchids other than Neos and Sedireas. Heck, just for Japanese plants in general. I'd love to have some of the jack-in-the-pulpits next to my Koi pond I'm putting in.
Cheers.

If you'd like some articles translated, I can volunteer to do some of them all I need are some scans of the text. While I'm not quite completely fluent with Japanese, I'm in the progress of learning and having some interesting text to read and translate will help a lot in my learning the language. Plus, if you do, I also benefit by being able to read some interesting Japanese orchid articles.

Which he will gladly share with the rest of us here!
How are you learning Japanese? Rosetta or school? Glenn Lehr tries to teach me something new each time we talk and I bought a translation book, but man! That's a hard way to do it!
Cheers.

I took 2 years worth of classes. Since I grew up with Korean, and Japanese has very similar grammar, it's not too difficult for me.
Other than that, I'm just doing as much as I can to read and listen to the language. For reading, I just use a dictionary and a firefox plugin called Rikaichan for internet based articles. Rikaichan automatically recognizes Japanese text and will show a popup with readings and definitions when you mouse over a piece of text.
Maybe I'll get rosetta stone to help it along further once I have time to sit down and do the exercises.
I do have to say though (turning this back into an orchid related post) knowing even a bit of Japanese helps a ton when it comes to researching neos and other Japanese orchids. There's just so much information out there that's not been translated even just on the web. Plus it's always fun to come across Japanese blog posts about plants and figuring out what the name is and other bits of information.
