Yes Jim, it does a little, but they do give the kanji (or Hanzi ) which are the same in Chinese, Korean and Japanese even when the phonetics are different. I don't speak any of these languages and my understanding of this is scratchy to say the least. Anyhow I have now five of the books listed on NWO website and they are a great help (together with Glenns names supplement that he supplies with the books), more often than not I can work out the Japanese name. Being at the "reading glasses required" part of middle age, going through the kanji index can be a bit of a strain, but worth the effort. Even the Japanese names when romanised can be a bit confusing all by themselves, I've seen the same plant (with the identical kanji) called both Nichi Gekou and Jitsugetsukoo, I have one, but what do I call it ?

I have to say that they are very good, healthy plants at reasonable prices and prompt service. They do deliver in the EU, but you have to watch their site because the hard to get varieties go very quickly. They also sell A4 and A5 grade moss ... which is actually the real thing, unlike the stuff I got from another supplier which was regular grade at the inflated price.
Darn, was hoping it would be a different place, since I know abotu Greeny Pottery! I don't have any Neo books, and I always hesitate to buy because I'm more familiar with the Japanese names, so it would be nice to know what their korean names correspond to...

Camille, there are some Japanese names with kanji in a previous OB thread : Antique fuukiran varieties

I will compile a list of the ones that I have sorted out and post it ... but maybe not today.

That would be great! Whenever you have time there's no rush. I'm too busy sorting out stuff in my new apartment to deal with orchid stuff for now. Thanks for that thread, I thought I remembered this being discussed here. So I have to compare the kanji on Grenny Pottery with those in the list, and hope it's there?

I use this website to look for Neo names (both english and kanji) and specifications (tsuke, color of flowers, leaf shape. It take a little experience to read it but with google translate it is much easier! (I don't read Japanese)
fuukiran.seesaa.net
富貴蘭を愛でる・・・・・

When you are on the main page, in the top of the right column, there is a search field, you can type english or kanji names (make sure to check the box on the right to search the site and not yahoo site).
Then if your variety is in their catalogue, you will see a page with pictures and descriptions. If you click on a photo, you go to the description page withplenty of information, including the english name

I love his site and I've admired his plants for the past year or so.

Only problem I've had with it is I've discovered recently it's not mobile friendly.. Which I guess ultimately is a good thing.

Cheers.
Jim

If anyone wants any Japanese neo names translated into Korean or vice versa, I can do it for you. I'm Korean myself (well, korean american) but I've also studied Japanese so the flip flop between Japanese and Korean is pretty easy for me. Also, I can do searches on google in both japanese and korean to find equivalencies in names. (e.g. manjushage = manjusahwa = samgaksan)

s.kallima, thanks for that.

Hakumin, I was very grateful for your previous post in the antique variety thread where you gave the list with the kanji. I'm guessing you need special software to type kanji. The translated list will be useful to EU neo fans as apart from Glenn at NWO who comes once a year, the only other vendor is Greeny-Pottery. Also there is a Korean site with links to a bunch of Korean vendors : ?

Cheers,
Tim
