I got my division in the mail last week and it's potted up and being babied big time! It looks great, even if it is tiny!

Is there a reason people divide them instead of letting them grow into larger specimen plants? Also is there such a thing as an inexpensive neo pot?

The Japanese growers keep them a certain size so they can still fit into a traditional raku pot for judging. They remove any growths that are out of place because the plants can be judged for overall appearance, which includes where each growth is and whether or not there are any stray leaves pointing in the wrong direction, etc. They "train" their neos. Kind of like how bonsai growers train their bonsai plants.

I'm ok with keeping them a certain size because I'm a big fan of mini orchids. For me, it's just a matter of personal preference.

Those black plastic slotted neo pots are usually just a few dollars. If you're talking about the painted clay pots, you can check ebay. There was a seller from England who had some hand made pots for under $30, I believe.

So what does the name Kinkujaku signify or mean? I've found no information on this.

I think it translates to 'Golden Peacock'.

Here is a link to the first American Fuukiran judging event in CA. 2010 Inaugural Fukiran Judging - Fukiran Society of America

Best of show winner is Peter Lin's 'Hokage'. It's the photo in the 3rd row, on top. Some may look at this and think, why would this plant win over that ginormous, blooming one with the super long roots?!?!

Because Peter's Hokage fits everything in the rules of the traditional Japanese fukiran judging. The plant is overall nicely balanced in regards to each fan and it's placement, variegation is beautiful, moss mound is done nicely and it is presented properly in a traditional Japanese neo pot with a Kanji tag.

If you look at some of the other photos, you can see that many of them show the pot facing a certain position, the foot of the pot facing forward. It is shown that way because that way is the proper way to display.

Sounds crazy and oh so anal? Indeed. And that's how they roll.
