What to do with long root when repotting
What do people do with really long roots when potting their neos?
I have seen some pics where the roots are dangling really far below the plant but the large specimine plants that are mounted in moss dont ever seem to have this, what do they do with the roots? maybe wrap them round the moss?
Just wanted to ask as i have a new neo that i need to repot and the roots are very long.

Are you talking about the ones that are mounded in the traditional Japanese method with the sphag?
I volunteered at a local orchid nursery a little while back where they have a vast collection of neofinetia and other Japanese minis. I helped remound some of the neos in sphag. When I asked the grower what to do about the long roots that could not fit in the slotted neo pots, he said, "Just cut them down to fit. They will grow more roots."
As long as you do this during their active growing season and you have a decent number of roots in place already, this works just fine. However, if this is your first neofinetia and you're not sure about culture yet, then don't cut anything. Maybe just try to wrap the roots around best you can.

I believe I have heard of people growing neos with long roots in Cym pots. Although, I don't know how they grow them (what is the culture is in a Cym pot).

if you want to do the traditional classic potting for Neos: you watch a YouTube video of it.
but if you want to just pot it to make it survive and bloom for you: you can use a small sized seedling media(bark, charcoal, lava rock and cut up moss) using a small Cym pot that is long and narrow that you can curl(like the ladies curl their hair) around the pot up til you fit all of the roots then start sprinkling the media all over the roots...
I pride myself with fat long roots of any vandacious especially Neos...I will not cut it...it takes years for roots to grow
small Cym. pots

I've seen videos where the Japanese growers just yank them off. Shocking as it sounds, they don't seem any worse for wear.
Cheers.

Tracy;
Would that have been at Jason's or Glenn's? I'd love to do something like that. Of course they'd have to pay me in plants.
Cheers.

That was for Jason at OL. I did it to thank him for all the bonus stuff he'd already given me. He gave me my first neofinetia back in the day when I had my 3 NOID Home Depot phals and 2 NOID Oncidium hybrids.
Glenn DID say he would pay in plants if I flew out to MI and helped him remound though You should give him a ring.

Ha! Marlene already has it all figured out! Go to Glenn's help him repot and get some plants. Then swing by the Grand Hotel on Mackinac island on the the way to Jason's. After repotting and getting plants at Jason's, we'll head out to the chateau at Lake Louise and finally on to Vancouver to hand deliver Kallima's Neos and pick up a couple boxes of Canadian Red Rose tea and some Okanagan Spring Pale Ale.
Whew! I might have to retire now!
Cheers.
