Just got this Neostylis Lou Sneary 'Bluebird' and as I got ii I was bit surprised, cause the plant really is ... not as handsome as others can be. Stiff, curved leaves, spotted and wrinkled, a stout little plant, oh yes, its strong, and I hope it will flower (it seems it has never flowered), but ... what to do with this little ugly?
As mounting on wood is not so good over here, no humidity and often windy days, I usually make baskets according to the plants shape. For this I decided to give him a "mount" or a "basket", made of regular grown twigs, same length all, filled with palm tree fibre and pieces of cinnamon. I don't know if the roots of Neostylis like to attach themselves, if so, they have plenty to do so...

When do Neostylis bloom for you? Flowering can happen all the year?

Why would you use cinnamon in the mount. Aren't you afraid of it being harmful to the roots? Other than that, I really like it.

Oh - that is just because I had it... I like to mix some in between the lava substrate, for the smell, perhaps there is a helping effect against fungi, and the pieces really need many years to decompose. No negative effects I have noticed so far in the last two years...

Wow, good to know. It is a descicant and we usually use it to dry up fresh cuts. I wouldn't have thought it ok to keep it near the roots for fear of drying them up. Glad it is working for you.

Interesting mount job! So creative! Good job!

So they are supposed to be blooming sometime soon then? I got mine earlier this year (February I believe) and it was in bloom then. I have yet to see a bloom stalk on mine, but WOW have the roots gone crazy!

And yes, the roots do attach themselves to the mount. I'm dreading the day I have to "rip" mine out of it's mount in favor of something else.

Little update...
By now there are sever or eight new lateral roots growing happily and a real bit root from the stem. The two upper leave still grow longer ... obviously its a slow grower!

Regards and happy new year

Mine are in bloom now. They are always small and spotted and shriveled, they are smaller than yours only about 10-12 leaves and already flowering for the 5-6th time.

They do well in bare root baskets with watering every day.

I love the basket - I've never seen one like this before. It's so creative. Where did you get the idea?
