I for one can't see what the problem is, years ago when I was growing Vandas in baskets, the only medium I used was large chunks of charcoal. The roots had no problem attaching to it and I never have an issue with fertilizer build up.

weird, seeing that you're in Florida, as well. So I'm sure they were getting heat and light in abundance. Humidity here is a lot lower over the summer than I expect you get in Florida, so maybe that was the deciding factor for me |

Indeed, the last blogs links show some well established plants on the charcoal. Good to know !
I still prefer the rock mounted plants.

I recognize those mosses. One looks like Anomodon. They both like lots of water and I would suspect the owners are using pure water to reduce fertilizer buildup.

Very unique idea. Mounts in general require more vigilance than potted 'chids. I really see no reason why it couldn't work with well weathered hunks.

At my most recent OS meeting a woman brought a beautifully blooming vanda in a basket - filled with large chunks of charcoal. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would also not believe this as a growing medium.
Interesting concept to mount onto it - not sure it would do well in my conditions, but I could imagine it works with the right circumstances.

I saw a blog on another forum where a man is growing amazing phals and Catts in charcoal in clay pots with holes. The temps he had them in were pretty high. but I imagine the evaporation off the clay would help with that
