I for one can't see what the problem is, years ago when I was growing Vandas in baskets, the only medium I used was large chunks of charcoal. The roots had no problem attaching to it and I never have an issue with fertilizer build up.

weird, seeing that you're in Florida, as well. So I'm sure they were getting heat and light in abundance. Humidity here is a lot lower over the summer than I expect you get in Florida, so maybe that was the deciding factor for me
