Little Neo. update
This is a sm. 7 leaf plant I obtained just about 3 weeks ago. I've had it in a.m. sun on an east facing windowsill. This morining I found this tiny new pinkish growth emerging from the first leaf axis. Really to small for my old digital camera to catch yet. I'm just surprised that such a sm. plant is putting out something, (new fan, root, spike?) The whole plant only measures about 2" x 3"
Cheers,
Tony

Surprise? Anyone who's getting surprises from their plants are keeping too many of them!

No idea what that is for now. My Neos tricked me several times into thinking it was spiking and in fact it was new fans. But on a one growth little plant like that I think it's more likely to be a fan.

Becca, little surpises, I can understand, but when folks talk about plants blooming and they didn't realize it until they see the flowers. I don't think they're looking at the orchids very often! Let's face it, its not like they grow that fast. That's what I meant when I said that hobbyist might want to think about downsizing! Of course it doesn't go for commercial growers, where its dollars and cents and not really the joy of growth any longer.

Even with a manageable collection (<50 plants) where I can look at each plant regularily, I have been surprised several times by spikes that were already 2-3in long! It's usually Onc spikes that stay hidden in the fold of a leaf, or Phal spikes that stay hidden under the leaf above it. It is so nice to discover that sort of thing.

Yep, not seeing a spike for a while, that I'd consider a nice surprise. I was talking about reading where folks had no idea, until the plant bloomed and I guess something other than green caught their eye?

I once left some Phals in the care of my sister at home when I was off at college. Go home 4 months later to see that several had spikes with developing buds on them. Surprised that my sister didn't mention it before I asked her about it. She hadn't seen that they were there until I pointed it out to her! OK sure since the plants were on a low shelf under lights so the spikes were not immediately visible, but how could she not see them while watering???? Still a mystery how she managed that, other than she doesn't like plants.
